Class Descriptions

*All classes (excluding Baby and Dance with Me!) are drop-off ONLY

Baby Music & Me! (3-17 months AS OF 9/30/2021)
Our Baby & Me classes combine music and movement through developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Our research-based curriculum is designed to be non-formal and non-performance oriented. This gives the opportunity for your child to learn at their own pace while also exploring different experiences to enhance their growth and development. With a mixture of dance, music, and yoga, our Baby & Me classes led by an infant and early childhood education specialist, and aim to boost developmental growth such as social skills, gross motor/fine motor skills, and creativity.
CLASSES: INFANTS (2-8 months/not mobile), CRAWLERS (6-10 months), & WALKERS (10-17months).

*One adult per child may participate. 
*Separate Baby/Parent mats are provided, & individual kit + props are included in registration fee.

Dance with Me! (18 months - 2Y AS OF 9/30/2021)  
A Parent & Me class for our tiniest dancers! This class blends dance, music, singing, and imagination, while building coordination, rhythm, balance, listening skills, and an early love of movement, and creative self-expression. We will introduce bending, stretching, swaying, and progress to loco motor movements such as, marching, galloping, jumping, as well as pre-ballet/jazz/hip-hop and tumbling skills, through the use of sing-along songs and lots of fun props.  *One adult per child may participate. Twinkle Babies (2 - 3Y AS OF 9/30/21)  
Twinkle Babies - A 30 minute introductory dance class for 2-3 year olds.We will get our little dancers moving with an introduction to ballet technique, combined with an intro to jazz and tap. Proper ballet technique and terminology will be introduced through imagery, creative dance, props and fun!
*Twinkle Cases + Props are included in registration fee.

HIP-HOP TOTS (2-3Y)  & HIP-HOP KIDS (3-5) (AS OF 9/30/2021)  
A toddler/Kid based version of our Hip-Hop class where our little dancers will begin to explore Hip-Hop dance through body isolated movements, bouncing, jumping, clapping, and basic hip-hop style movement. We will also explore basic tumbling skills that will help with strength and hip-hop style ‘tricks.’
*Dance bag and SFK Dresscode Tshirt 
are included in registration fee.

TWINKLESTARS 3-4 & 4-5 (Previously Combo 1/2)  
Twinkle Star Dance is an age-specific 45-minute class. We expand upon basic rhythm, coordination, and timing and begin to emphasize posture, and technique within a positive environment. Dancers learn fundamental ballet, tap and jazz steps and terminology in all three styles. The majority of this class is ballet focused, with the first 10 - 15 minutes spent on tap. Students should arrive to class wearing tap shoes. Teachers will assist dancers with shoe changes.

Spanish Time (Ages 3 - 7 years AS OF 9/30/20)  

Our introductory immersion class will have your child communicating in Spanish in no time! Whether your child knows some words or none at all, this is a great class to learn everyday vocabulary with the goal of forming simple short sentences. Our teacher, Michelle Colon Garcia, a native Spanish speaker from Puerto Rico, and has been a childhood educator for over 10 years. Everyday topics will be introduced, like greetings, colors, numbers, days of the week, opposites, verbs, foods and more!  Once the children become familiar with new words they will start communicating with each other in Spanish and forming sentences.

ACRO TOTS & KIDS (Previously Acro Preschool)
The AcroDance Preschool curriculum focuses on physical literacy for young students ages 3 to 5. This is an introductory class where we will focus on learning Acro positions, locomotive skills, balance, and movement concepts through imaginary play, fun and games. By the end of the season the dancers will be able  to correctly perform pre-cartwheels, L handstands, and somersaults, and will be ready to move up to our Primary Acrobatic Arts program where they will work their way up to handstands, cartwheels, and walkovers, and eventually, back-handsprings, and ariels effortlessly across the stage! This is a great stand-alone class for boys and girls, and is also a fantastic addition to any dancer’s training.

ACRO (Acrobatic Arts) I-V (Ages 5 & Up)(AS OF 9/30/20)  
Acrobatic Arts is based on safe and effective progressions with proven results in five divisions of AcroDance: Flexibility, Strength, Balancing, Limbering and Tumbling. Developed with input from professionals and experts in dance, contortion, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, sport acrobatics, yoga, acro yoga, pilates, physiotherapy, and more, you will not find a more comprehensive program.  Simple thoughtful progressions take the beginner preschool level dancer from log rolls and summersaults to the advanced dancer doing back handsprings, ariels, and tumbling effortlessly across the stage! This is a great stand-alone class for boys and girls, a fantastic addition to any dancer’s advanced training, and a required class for our SFK Performance Team.Click HERE for Acro I-V dress code
Jazz (Ages 5-Teen) (AS OF 9/30/2021)  
A high energy, technique based style of dance, that combines classic broadway jazz with ethnic styles, contemporary and hip hop. We focus on core strength, flexibility, isolations, leaps, and turns to fast paced, contemporary music such as pop, R&B/Hip-Hop, or Broadway. Jazz classes are a great work-out and a fun way to release tension while attaining a body awareness that can be applied to everyday activities.

Hip-Hop dance is a fun-filled and energetic class. The fundamentals of old, and new-school hip-hop dance will be taught including, warm-up, stretching, and skills such as, popping, locking, waving, free-styling, and breakdancing tricks, to precisely choreographed routines. As students progress through our program, choreography will become more complex and intricate.

Broadway Bound! (Age 5 & Up)(AS OF 9/30/2021)  

In this dance-based musical theater class, students will bring familiar stories & movies, to the stage! By incorporating basic dance & musical theater technique including scene study, voice technique, character study, and group choreography, students will perform adaptations such as  “Annie,” “Grease," "The Descendants," and "Peter Pan" to name a few. 

Triple Threat (Age 8 & Up) (AS OF 9/30/2021)  

An intensive program suited for any young star on the rise. This class prepares the students to meet the challenges of professional auditions, musicals, talent shows, & everyday confidence!

The Ballet Academy 
Classical Ballet 1/2 
(Age 7 & Up) (AS OF 9/30/2021)  
The Ballet Academy at SFK Academy of Dance provides dancers with a solid base for all dance styles.  Students will learn classical ballet technique and terminology. Each class includes barre exercises, centre floor work, and across-the-floor combinations.  Our structured ballet curriculum is a combination of Vaganova, Cecchetti and Balanchine styles blended to educate dancers who are unaffected by a particular style. As students progress through each level, the curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate. 
Classical Ballet III, Pre-Pointe (Ages 10 & Up, by invitation only) (AS OF 9/30/2021)  
By invitation only, Pre-Pointe is an added class to select Classical Ballet 3 students. The objective of Pre-pointe class is to further develop and strengthen the muscles necessary to go en pointe- particularly the metatarsals and ankles. Pre-pointe class stresses correct alignment and correct classical ballet technique and allow teachers to assess readiness, offering an atmosphere for proper evaluation of important skills.

Lyrical/Contemporary (Ages 7 & Up) (AS OF 9/30/2021)  
Lyrical dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, and classical ballet. Students will learn to interpret music lyrics by telling a story with movement that can be fluid or abstract.  Lyrical is the precursor to Contemporary dance which can be seen in music videos such as Sia’s “Chandelier,” and the Emmy award winning choreography from “So You Think You Can Dance.” We highly recommend that dancers enrolled in this class also take Ballet at least once a week. Click HERE for Lyrical dress code
Tap (Ages 7 & Up) (AS OF 9/30/2021)  
Tap is an exciting, rhythmic and dance form which is enjoyed by both kids and adults. Rooted in African-American History, tap offers a variety of styles and techniques like Broadway, rhythm tap & hoofing. Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. Class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, and having fun.
